Diving SpotsTULAMBEN AREA
THE WRACK OF THE LIBERTY
Best depth: 5-30 m
The American freighter was attacked by Japanese 1942. It sunk and lied 20 years half in the water half outside the water. An earthquake in the year 1963 made it moving totally underwater. The 120m wrack lies parallel to the beach and is now one of the most spectacular divespots on Bali. You will see schools of Jacks which surround us, Napoleon Wrasses, Scorpionfish, Snapper, big Potato Cods, Moray Eels, and if we are lucky Sharks. But not to forget the “small specialties” like nudibranches, ghost-pipe-fishes and a lot of crabs and Shrimps on their cleaning-stations.
THE DROP OFF
Best depth: until 40 m
We will start from the beach. First you will see a huge field of stones with a lot of nudibranches on. Then in 18 m there is a enormous drop-off where you will find in about
30 m the biggest violet Gorgonia in Bali. There are all kinds of fishes, too, from tiny till huge.
BATU NANAS
Best depth: 5-40 m
This slope with its rocks reminding of pineapples, is 5 minutes away with the boat. Only a few people dive here and the chance of big fish is given. But the friends of the macro-part will have fun, too.
BATU PANJANG
Best depth: 5-25 m
Dive from the boat. We can find Pygmae- Seahorses and very often Harlequin-Ghost-Pipe- Fishes. The slope is running slow till 50 m. We might have the chance for turtles and big fish.
CORAL- GARDEN
Best depth: until 18 m
A small divespot with a huge quantity of different Anemones all with their Clownfishes and other “inhabitants”. Almost every dive there are Harlequin- Ghost-Pipe-Fishes and Blue- and Black Ribbon Eels. It is a beautiful spot and very nice for nightdives, too.
HINDUNG LAUT
Best depth: ???
A few kilometres away from Tulamben the Lava was floating into the sea in never ending depth. This spot is full of fish. Beside the big ones like Tunas, Jacks, Barracudas and sometimes sharks we will find a Pygmae-Seahorse, Ribbon-Eels and big Octopus.
A little bit further down there is cold water and incredible beautiful Gorgonians. This spot is not very known. Therefore not many people dive there. It is one of my absolute favourites.
AMED AREA
JEMELUK DROP-OFF
Best depth: 10-40 m
We start with the boat from Amed. It is a slope which runs into a drop-off with canyons in about 20 m. Batfish, Barracudas, Snapper and Sharks surround us. On the way back there are Big-mouth-Jacks, Nudibranches and a lot of Moray-Eels.
JAPANESE SHIPWRACK
Best depth: until 26 m
Not very famous but excellent divespot. In about 7 m there is a small ship-wrack full with soft-corals. We follow the slope behind the wrack and find Pygmae- Seahorses. The way back is fascinating, too, because there are many big Table-corals and Stone-corals in which Damselfishes search for shelter.
CANDI DASA
TEPEKONG ISLAND
Best depth: 5-40 m
The island is located right in the middle of Lombok Strait and the currant can be very strong there. But the chance of Big Fish is therefore given. On the backside of the small Island there is a tunnel where you can fall in the blue till 33 m. Then a breathtaking drop-off starts.
GILI MIMPANG
Best depth: 5-30 m
Three single rocks with small caves rise out of the water. Sharks love to sleep there. It is very likely that we see Eagle-Rays and turtles. Because of its location in the Lombok Strait there could be strong current, too.
MENJANGAN ISLAND
In the nature reserve and Marine Park Menjangan Island, which is located in the north-east of Bali, we can choose between 10 divespots. Almost every dive there is a drift-dive. The boat is following the divers. If we are lucky we can see Mantas, Eagle-Rays, sharks and schools of Barracudas. Giant Gorgonians in every colour raise of the walls. The visibility is very often till 40 meters or more.
SECRET BAY
The bay of Gilimanuk in the very north-east of Bali is something very special for Macro-photographers. There are Seahorses, Frogfishes, Leaffishes, Gobies and Mantis-Shrimps only to tell a few. The Secret Bay is not made for everybody because there are almost no Corals but you can find here real attractions in Coke-Cans and thrown away old shoes.
NIGHTDIVES
The nightdives all over Bali are not beatable. We meet the Spanish-Dancer with its Imperator-Shrimp, Moray Eels at the cleaning-station, Stonefish, Twin-spotted-lion-fishes,Ghost-Pipe-Fishes, and a lot more.
I will be very happy to discover together with you the beauty of the underwater-world of Bali.
See you soon
